TENNESSEE CLAY MARBLES

Marbles have been around since, well - forever. I've found them in Indian camps while I was arrow head hunting. If you've never played you don't know what your missing. There nothing more fun than winning all your friends marbles and making them cry.

Now these marbles do not go back to the CW but they are a very rare find. I think you could pass some of the "swirleys" off as CW if you were of a mind to be a dirty cheat as some are almost a solid color. I'll tell you the story that I was told about these marbles. There was a marble factory in upper central middle Tennessee. Somewhere around Carthage. It burned in the 1920's and was never rebuilt. About 7 years ago some one finally decided to build on the site of the old marble factory. While digging the footer for the new building they hit a large cache of the old marbles. I bought a few hundred from one of the guys who was on the work crew. As usual I forgot all about them until I stumbled across them while looking for some completely unrelated item. But now that they have been re-found I'm going to offer them up for sale.
Notice in the photo that some have designs? Each one was hand painted! The "artist" seemed to have had free reign as no two are exactly alike. They have all sorts of designs on them. One has a skunk, another a Christmas tree ornament but most have flower like designs or simple rings. They are certainly a unique part of Tennessee history even if they are not Civil War dated.

MUSICAL TRIANGLE

I've always felt that music brings out the best in people and participating in the making is so much the better. Triangles have legitimate uses in all types of music but my favorite use of this instrument is handing one to a youngster and watching the smile come across their face.
Our triangles are hand forged from steel, not iron and tempered to a hardness that imparts a very pure tone to our little instrument. They have a very "chime" like report, very mellow and easy on the ear. Believe it or not their is such a thing as a bad triangle, they sound like someone dropping an iron pipe on a concrete floor - so beware of fly by night or door to door triangle salesmen.

SOLID BRASS BUGLE

Some years ago we stopped offering this product as we could not find one suitable. Either the price was just too high or the quality was too low. Rather than sell you an inferior bugle we just dropped them all together. I think we have finally found a supplier who will satisfy both you and I, the price is great and so is the quality.
This solid brass bugle is very well made. It's 12 inches in length, the seams are well soldered and it's polished to a bright finish. The mouth piece if fair, if your a pro you will probably want to change it out but it is usable. If your a beginner, it'll do for now. There are a lot of more expensive models out there but this is a very good value.

GAME OF GRACES

A period correct game for
young ladies. It's a hoop toss game that is recommended by Mrs L. Maria Child, the most published women author of her time. Said to improve the physical fitness of young girls. In the book, "The girls own book", published in 1834 (for sale in our ladie's book section). Mrs. Child gives you a very good look into the upbringing of what would be a middle aged women during the Civil War period. Any good game is handed down from mother to child. There are several lithographs of children holding this game in magazines of the day.

Harmonica, Honer Brand. Honer is one of the oldest harmonica companies in the world today. According to the best information I have, the harmonica was invented in Germany 1821, by F. Buschmann. The reed plate of many harmonicas (that is all that survives) have been dug by relic hunters in Civil War camp sites and on the battle fields. The one offered for sale here is in the key of C.

Wooden Dice

If you have read many soldier's diaries then you know that when they did have any free time one of their favorite things to do was to gamble. Wasn't it Sam Watkins who in his book "Co. Aytch" said that all the boys would throw away the cards and dice before they went into battle. So that if they were killed and their body or belongings sent home their mothers and wives wouldn't find these instruments of the devil in their pockets. Now you don't have to actually wager to have fun with a pair of dice. I can shoot craps for hours just for the fun of it, just ask my wife. In camp I have been known to play for hard tack from time to time. I'm sure even if your only rolling "high dice" for who has to stand guard tonight you too will have lots of fun with these wooden dice.

HISTORICAL SIGNALS AND SEMAPHORES

If the Signal Core is your interest your going to love this. This is not just some little deck of cards. This is a fantastic set of useful signal practice tools to help you actual send and receive using flags, semaphores or lights. There is also a great 60 page booklet on the history of signaling. You get one deck of playing cards showing the flags and the corresponding letter and another showing how to send using semaphores along with a semaphore wheel chart for fast accurate sending. You will also receive a signal flag wall poster and a phonetic alphabet poster showing it's use from 1913 till present. There are even two hand held practice "flashers" (cardboard cut outs but they work great) so you and a partner can practice sending Morse code! My Navy buds love this set and are buying them up as quick as I can get them in. If you have even a passing interest in signaling you'll love it too!

18th CENTURY PLAYING CARDS

I know, we already carry a large selection of playing cards for the civil war period but I guess I'm weak for these things. I just can't pass up a great looking set of historical playing cards.
This set will work for any early period, colonial right up through 1812, possibly even the Texas / Mexican War. They are printed on parchment colored card stock. The inks are dull hued so as to give the impression of early inks rather than our bright colors of today. The backs are blank as was the tradition of the time.

ILLUMINATED PLAYING CARDS

When I first saw these cards I was very impressed. Well made, heavy stock, very colorful and they come in a great paste board box, very period in it's style and also very brightly colored. That's where the term "Illuminated" comes from, they used a great deal of gold ink in the manufacture of these cards. The photo above does not do them justice. Period correct in every detail. I would venture to say that these cards were top of line when they were first produced and there still first rate.

PLAYING CARDS 1862

Well it looked like nobody was going to reproduce these cards so I just did it myself. I got tired of playing poker at first Mananas with a deck that wasn't produced till 1864! The colors are brighter than seen in the photo. Some days my photographic abilities are somewhat lacking.

Here's what the original box (and our repro) has printed on it.

The American Card Co. Confident that the introduction of NATIONAL EMBLEMS in the place of Foreign, in PLAYING Cards will be hailed with delight by the American People, take pleasure in presenting the UNION PLAYING CARDS as the first and only genuine American Cards ever produced, the the fullest confidence that the time is not far distant when they will be the leading card in the American market. etc. etc. etc.
Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1862. etc. etc. etc.
