BUTTONS MILITARY & CIVILIAN

CS FLOWER COAT BUTTON

Here is a very good example of a CS Flower style coat button. If you are not familiar with the term don't be alarmed. It is simply the name that early diggers gave to any design of civilian button with a floral motif found in CS camps. Boy were they were plentiful! Some early camps would yield only 1 military button to every 10 civilian button dug. The two most common being the "flower" buttons and the "coin" buttons.
This one measures 7/8 of an inch and has a very strong shank and I would not be at all afraid to use it. It has a strong back mark but I can not make it out. All these birthday candles are ruining my eyes! It's nice that there are still a few areas of this hobby that can be affordably collected.

1851 FLOWER HARD RUBBER BUTTON

I am a great fan of Mr. Goodyear's 1851 patent hard rubber buttons, so much so that I have duplicate, triplicate etc. etc. in my collection. I think it's time to start thinning them out a bit.
This little two hole beauty is what I consider a mid-size button, about 3/4 of an inch. It will work well for a jacket or the closer for a purse or just a nice addition to your sewing kit when laid out at your next living history. I personally like mis-matched buttons on CS jackets. The Carter House Museum in Franklin Tn. has a very good ID'd CS jacket with hard rubber buttons. P.S.
Your eyes do not deceive you, the front of the button is a chocolate color while the reverse appears darker, almost black.

10 SMALL WHITE GLASS BUTTONS

You won't find many glass buttons while your out digging in a camp unless your lucky enough to find a trash pit. Then you will find glass buttons galore! The more you sift the more you find. There's nothing special about these buttons, they don't match exactly but they are all about the same size, there maybe a chip off of one of them but nothing that will hurt. They are just as they came out of the hole minus a little dirt. If you would like to have a good original period correct style of button that everyone else does not have then this is as good as it gets.

BLOCK I PUFFED RIM

I don't let go of many Wartrace relics but I'm sort of heavy on Block I buttons. This coat size, puff rim or Tennessee style, as they are often called has a great face on it. I've used the photo above so that you can see all the details of this one. It really looks better in actual size but I wanted you to see that this face is perfect. As so often is the case though the iron back is all but gone, hardly anything left. But you can only display one side at a time so what the heck.

BLOCK I PUFFED RIM $79.95 SOLD

SCRIPT I BUTTON

This too is a Wartrace find but like I said, I've got about all the I buttons one fellow can use. This coat size script I is pretty nice as you can see by the photo above. Very dark color and no large dents or pushes. The iron back is rusty but 90% complete with no shank. I think the face will rate at least mid grade for a dug button. Have you priced a non-dug? They make this one look very economical. You can't have a CS collection without a couple of I buttons.

SCRIPT I BUTTON $79.95 SOLD
