As you may well be aware I have a collecting fetish. This fetish knows no category, bounds nor limits but for some time now books have been the dominant species of my collecting. Their forage has grown scarce and they have begun fighting amongst themselves - so in accordance with the laws of nature it is time to thin the herd. My books are simply over flowing my office, study and various other nooks and crannies of my home. Since my fear of being crushed under a pile of poorly stacked volumes of Bruce Canton is greater than my desire to keep my eclectic pounds of parchment I have decided to offer a few of them for sale. I hope you can find something here that you will enjoy. Books are one of the few things I don't mind passing on as long as they are going to a good home. You will give them a good home will you not?
There is no rhyme nor reason to the way I have them listed. You will find a Civil War era book and listed next will be a World War II followed by a copy of Mad Magazine. There is only one page of used books, one long - long - long page. So scroll till your hearts content. Should you have a question about one of the books please email me, I will be happy to answer any and all.
DOOLY COUNTY GEORGIA
This is not the easiest set of books to find. I have volume 2 and 3 of DOOLY COUNTY GEORGIA HISTORICAL & GENEALOGICAL COLLECTIONS by Nora and Watts Powell. You get both of them for $49.95, If you've done any research in Mid. Ga. you already know that this is the most complete and most quoted set of genealogical records for that area hands down. I could list the contents of this book but there's no need. Everything is in here, a remarkable set of Bible records for the area, the 1821 Land Lottery, 1850 Census, Cemetery Records, etc. etc. etc. If you can't find them in here then they lived somewhere else. Good luck finding vol. 1. No one wants to part with these books. Volume one is probably available at your library but they are not going to let you check it out. You have to look at it there.
Both volumes are in great condition. There is a little dirt on the cover of volume 2 as seen in the photo above. Should clean up easily.

RIDABOCK & CO. MIITARY GOODS CATALOG
This is a reproduction of the 1880s RIDABOCK & CO. MIITARY GOODS CATALOG, formally the J.H. McKenney Co. A 48 page catalog of all the "latest" military goods for officers. If your a military collector this little book can be a great help dating equipment. It's amazing just how much of the stuff still being sold at the time of this catalog is the exact same as Civil War Era! Some of the changes are unexpected and extreme. This book is very similar in substance to the Shuyler, Hartly and Graham catalog but not as large. There is a small amount of police and train conductor gear shown.

FOXFIRE 4
This Foxfire 4 is from the 1977 printing, paperback as they all were. (To my knowledge anyway) 496 pages of "how to" and it really is an instructional, not just an overview.
If you are not familiar with the foxfire series your in for a treat. The focus all foxfire books is on the lost or what we perceive will soon be lost way of life which only exist in isolated pockets of the country. Those few old timers who still practice self sufficiency and how they do it. I remember reading 1 thru 6 when they came out back in the day. They were very popular and they are still in print! That says something for them.
I think the photo above is of Number 1 but we are selling Number 4 of the series here. It focuses on Knife making, Wood carving, Fiddle making, Wooden sleds, Gardening, Making tar, Water systems, Cheese making and a whole lot more. The books in very good condition.

COMPLETE WORKS OF POE
The complete works of Edgar Allan Poe. Still the best, no one better. The master of he short story! Poe's early work often appeared in Graham's Magazine and he was often associated with that magazine. Poe could be a terrible critic if he did not like your work, thoroughly "trashing" an author or playwright in the press. My first remembrance of being completely engrossed in a story may very well be of "The Tell Tale Heart", or perhaps it was the "Pit and the Pendulum"? We had several teachers in early grade school who would read Poe to us if we would shut up long enough. I bet they don't do that now!
This book is in like new condition, so is the dust jacket. 1966 copyright.

THE LADY OF GODEY'S,
SARAH JOSEPHA HALE
The Lady of Godey's, Sara Hale, by Ruth E. Finley. This is the 1931 edition. It is an ex library book, still in good shape but no dust cover. This is not the Johnny come lately knock off known as "the ladies of godey's". That thing sucks. If you see it don't buy it.
Sarah Hale is credited with being the first female editor in the US. She is certainly the driving force who made Thanksgiving a legal holiday. She wrote a cook book and a "how to" (do everything around the house) book and she is the author of the children's poem, "Mary had a little Lamb". This book is as much about the Mr. Godey, the Magazine, how and why it came to be as it is about Mrs. Hale. Everyone loves to quote Godey's but did you ever wonder just how it came about? I'll bet that few of your compatriots know the story. A very - very enjoyable book. Of course it contains several of the famous "fashion plates".
This book is in good condition, no dust jacket. A small, light water stain on the front bottom edge of the cover. 1931 copyright.

TITANIC
I don't suppose the story of the Titanic will ever fade far from current topics. I can still remember when I was a small child my grandmother would tell us the story. I recall that every time she did there was this earnest yet excited look that would come over her face which only came to view when she told this story and no other. It made one hell of an impression on those who were old enough to remember when it happened.
This book is by Leo Marriott, I would consider it a coffee table book. Lots of large photos which show great detail of the ship, interior and exterior and of course the now famous photos of the bow taken when it was rediscovered. Quite a bit of back ground on the ship, the crew and the passengers. Some stories of the survivors. Well worth the time.
This book is in like new condition, with dust jacket. 1997 copyright.

RAILROADS
This book was published by National Geographics, written by Charles Ogburn with photos by James A. Sugar. This book entails the history of trains in the U.S. There is a small chapter on trains during the Civil War which has a couple of photos I've never seen before. I don't get to say that often! Quite a bit of this book deals with trains and their passage West. It also covers the pinnacle of steam engines in the 1920s and 30s. Lots of good photos. Fun to read. It has 203 pages and a great index.
This book is in very good condition, with a few minor tears in the dust jacket. 1977 copyright.

THE VIRGINIANS
The Virginians, written by William Thackeray in 1858-59 is a continuation of one of his previous works, "The History of Henry Esmond". The story follows Henry's grandsons as they move to America. One of his last works, widely popular at the time and still considered a great work, certainly a classic. It was still required reading when I was in school.
This book like all popular literature of the day would have been the topic of conversation when and where ever people gathered. I've always thought it important to know something of the topics of the era the we are trying to portray. That is why I always suggest that re-enactors read at least a few of the "works" of the day.
This book is in very good condition. No dust jacket. It is not dated but I would guess it was printed in the late 1950's or early 60s.

THE BATTLE OF NEW MARKET
The Battle of New Market. Shenandoah Valley, May 1864: battleground of two great armies and 258 young V.M.I. cadets. Written by William C. Davis in 1975. I like the way this book is written. I don't care for a lot of the histories written in the 50s, 60s or 70s but this one flows well, no dull spots to force yourself through. It has a supper appendix, you could research from here to forever just using Mr. Davis's sources.

THE DAMNED ENGINEERS!
The Damned Engineers, how one battalion of Combat Engineers stalled Hitler's offensive in the Battle of the Bulge written by Janice Holt Giles with an introduction by Martin Blumenson.
Rather than me rattling on here's what one of the guys who was their had to say about this book.
Although I had played a very active part in helping turn back the German winter offensive of 1944-45, there was a tremendous amount of detailed information in The Damned Engineers of which I had been unaware. It is quite a remarkable book and should be of particular interest to historians. Mrs. Giles has done a tremendous amount of research, I found it very good reading. James M. Gavin.

LINCOLN ON LEADERSHIP
Lincoln on Leadership, executive strategies for tough times by Donald T. Phillips. Printed by Time Warner, 1992. 188 pages.
Generally speaking I enjoy all the Leadership books. I've tried to read all of them as I find them available. There is always something to be learned from people who have been tried by fire. This book is no exception.
Here's a small sampling; Wage only one war at a time. Invest time and money in better understanding the ins and outs of human nature. When you extinguish hope you create desperation. You must remember that people who have not even been suspected of disloyalty are very adverse to taking an oath of any sort as a condition of exercising an ordinary right of citizenship. It also contains several of Lincoln's more important letters.

EMBATTLED CONFEDERATES
Embattled Confederates, an illustrated history of Southerners at War. Text by Irvin Wiley with illustrations compiled by Hirst D. Milhollen. Printed by Bonanza books in 1964.
This is a very good book. This book set the standard and the pattern by which the set "Echo's of Glory" tried to obtain. Where Echoes is a three volume set this single book deals exclusively with the CSA and does a very good job. If you are just starting your CS library this is as good a first book as I could recommend. It gives a good overall view of most subjects with some very good photos of relics, soldiers in uniform as well as civilians. Out of print for quite some time I can still find one on occasion but they are becoming scarce.

VANITY FAIR
Thackeray wrote Vanity Fair in 1847-48, it permanently established his fame as a novelist. Set in the time during the Crimean War, this novel departed from convention in having no hero or heroine and no plot in the conventional sense. It is a portrait of society centered on three families interrelated by acquaintance and marriage, the events of whose lives are organized by the broad movement of time rather than artificial complication and resolution. This "formlessness" helps to create an illusion of reality, given substance by an infinitude of authentic details in the description of the actions of daily life and in the differentiation of character by style of speech. In the irrepressibly resourceful, though amoral, Becky Sharp, Thackeray created one of fiction's most engaging characters.
This book like all popular literature of the day would have been the topic of conversation when and where ever people gathered. I've always thought it important to know something of the topics of the era the we are trying to portray. That is why I always suggest that re-enactors read at least a few of the "works" of the day.

THE SHADE OF THE TREES
The Shade of the Trees, the dramatic and exciting story of Lt. General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. The great Civil War Hero, second only to the immortal Rober E. Lee, in the hearts and minds of the Southerners.
The author has told the story through a fictional character who follows our hero from birth to death. The poverty and trials of early life, dreams for success and ambitions of recognition, love of country, family and fellow men are regulated by Jackson's personal but mystical belief in preordination and predetermination governed by his Heavenly Father and which were manifest throughout his short but brilliant career.
Very good reading, I recommend it highly.

CALEB PETTENGILL U.S.N.
CALEB PETTENGILL U.S.N. by George Fielding Eliot, published in 1956.
A marvelous yarn concerning young Mr. Caleb Pettengill of New England who commands a vessel in the Union Navy during the Civil War, whose flamboyant charm is irresistible to women, and who believes passionately not only in the Union cause but also in the revolutionary new uses of steam, ironclad ships, explosive shell and rifled guns. In this impetuous and ambitious young officer, George Fielding Eliot has created a personality that stands, with Captain Horatio Hornblower, as one of the strongest and most appealing characters of historical fiction. A lusty and exciting sea story that brings vividly to life, through the experiences of one man and his ship, the birth pangs of the steam Navy and the trials of the men who manned it during an era that has never ceased to fire the imaginations of American readers.
This is a fictional account, not history but a good story.

THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC
Army of the Potomac by Bruce Catton: Glory Road, Published 1952. In those critical months between the autumn of 1862 and midsummer of the following year, the eventual outcome of the Civil War was determined by the Army of the Potomac. After a bloody massacre at Fredericksburg, an aimless and muddy march up and sown the banks of the Rappahannock, and a catastrophe of confusion at Chancellorsville, this army took a firm stand on the hills of the west of a small Pennsylvania town called Gettysburg and finally turned the fortunes of war against the Confederacy.

CIVIL WAR MEMORIES
Civil War Memories, edited by S. T. Joshi, published in 2000. This book includes stories by Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, Ambrose Bierce, Stephen Crane, and others.
It takes a eyewitness to know what the tensions and tragedy of the Civil War were really like. In fact, Ambrose Bierce once said that critics labeled as "improbable" or "impossible" stories he wrote that were transcripts from memory - things that actually occurred before my eyes.
Because the nineteen stories collected here were written by those who participated in the war, observed it, or heard about it firsthand, they have a ring of authenticity not always found in Civil War Accounts written in the twentieth century. The voice are both male and female, northern and southern, both angry and melancholy, serious and comic.
Very good reading, I recommend it highly.

LITTLE WOMEN
I think we all know the story here. I suppose this is Mrs. Alcott's best known work, a classic to say the least. I guess it would be difficult for a paper to be a collectable but there is something about this one that I like. This is a 1969 printing, a scholastic edition. The graphics are cheesy and the colors are odd but there is just something about it that I like. I know you've seen the movie a dozen times but the book is still fun to read.

THE GREATEST GENERATION SPEAKS
The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw. One of the best things about this book is Tom Brokaw really doesn't have much to do with it. Some days I think that guy's a knot head. Our greatest generation, the depression era, world war II, mom and dad to the baby boomers. That really was a hard life.
I really do like this book. The author just lets the people tell their story and they did a great job of it too. It reminds me of when I was a kid sitting around listening to my Dad and his brother's swap war stories. If your a child of the greatest generation you probably grew up with these stories or some very similar. I know I did and I still enjoy them. If your not, well you missed out. Thankfully you can still hear them here if you'll take the time. A very enjoyable book.

TRAILS WEST
Trails West by the National Geographic Society, printed in 1979.
One of things that I like about a Nat. Geo. Book is how they, when looking at the past compare it with the present or in this case what was the present, 1979. As you might expect the photography is fantastic showing many of the current inhabitants of the cities and towns that most of us only know by legend, Tombstone, Deadwood, etc. and how many of these folks are working to see that our western history is not lost. Of course when you say "western" most of us will think first of the cowboy era but there is so much more than that. The early trappers and traders in the 1820s and 30s. The explorers (often military expeditions) of the 1840s and 50s many of whom you will come to know best from their role in the American Civil War. The indian fighters and settlers of the 1860s and 70s and of course the cowboys, gamblers and gunfighters! A very good way to spend an afternoon or two.

THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT
At seven oclock on the morning of April 14, 1865, President Lincoln came out of his bedroom, nodded to the night guard, and started down the hall to his office. At 7:22 a.m. the following morning Surgeon General Barnes pressed silver coins to his eyelids as Mrs. Lincoln moaned.
The president's day was, as usual, crammed with meeting and appointments, but he was probably no busier than the man who would stand behind him at FordS Theater that evening. For though the plan had been a long time brewing, the time and place were not set until eleven that morning.
Minute by minute "The Day Lincoln Was Shot" chronicles the movements of these two men until the almost unbearable suspense snaps with a single gunshot and a leap to the stage. From a thousand bits and scraps of information Jim Bishop has fashioned an unforgettable tale of tragedy more gripping than fiction, more alive than any newspaper account. Written in 1955 and I've not seen anything better on the subject yet.

THE FOUR DEUCES
A KOREAN WAR STORY
The war was winding down when C. S. Crawford, a very young marine, cam to Korea. Crawford (nicknamed, "Cautious on the line.") had been a telephone operator at Quantico, but the war called. Then, a series of administrative foul ups resulted in his assignment first as a cryptographer, a highly technical position for which he had not received any training and then as a forward observer for the 4.2 inch chemical mortar company, 1st Bn. of the 1st Marine Regiment. Having an uncanny talent for judging distance, Crawford excelled at his job.
at this time the fighting in Korea had been mostly reduced to holding the high ground. The troops sat in their trenches in the bitterly cold weather, occasionally shooting at the enemy, being shot at, ambushed on their way to chow, killed, wounded or simply managing to stay alive and whole, longing for some hot food and the whisky distilled by the "chef".
Crawford is a wonderful teller of tales and though some of his characters composites of men he knew, they live on the page as unforgettable individuals: The Funny Gunny who took young Crawford under his wing; Big Dog Ondrak who taught the novice about the Four Deuce; Red, who had all his possessions attached to his clothes strings; The Armenian Jew who was neither Armenian nor Jewish but a great provider; The Candy Bar Kidd who lost his life fighting Luke the Gook; and McLaughlin who staked his life on a dirty sock.
Some of these tales may be tall, says the author but Marines never lie, they are all based in fact.

Upon his recovery, Donaldson reluctantly accepted promotion to a captaincy in the Corn Exchange Regiment (also known as the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteers), which served throughout it's existence in the V Corps. In his new position, Donaldson participated in all the major campaigns and battles in the East through late 1863, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, and Nine Run.
Although Donaldson made no secret of his distaste for writing, he consistently sent home full, descriptive accounts of his experiences- some of his letters filled as many as fifty pages of writing paper. Nearly all of his letters were written in camp or while on active campaign, imparting a freshness and immediacy that is rarely seen. His comments on fellow soldiers-be they lowly privates or major generals-were pointed and unvarnished. In addition to writing ably and expressively about many aspects of his service, including his combat experience, Donaldson also revealed much about the seldom mentioned facts of army live-the internal feuding, the backbiting and politicking that coursed through many Civil War Regiment.
