U.S. NAVY JUMPER
Well here we are again. After several hundred hours of research and development (Me driving everyone crazy) we have had our Eureka moment. We are happy to say that we can now offer you the best Navy jumper, trousers, undershirts and shoes available to date.
Here's how our process started. We bought the best Navy uniform we could find. Pants and jumper from the National Civil War Navy Museum, Columbus Georgia. Then after studying hundreds of original period photographs and annoying museum curators across the country we made the needed alterations to give you the most commonly seen enlisted navy uniform that you would find in any port during the time period.
Our jumper (blouse) is made from 100% wool matching the weight of the originals so you can wear your blues even in warm weather. Not the heavy coat weight so often used in other re-enacting garments. All of our jumpers come with a pocket over the left breast you can drop you lanyarded knife or marlin spike right in while working in the rigging.
Comfortable? You bet! Authentic? The best! You will not be disappointed.

Not civil war but who else would you expect to have these if not the Blockade Runner? There about the size of a half dollar, made from aluminum just like the originals. The one on the right is an original and if you run into Mr. North tell him he lost his dog tag in Fosterville Tn. You will have to stamp it yourself.

Well if you read the story above there's no use in me repeating myself. I'll just say that making these trousers is one of - if not the most labor intensive garment we have ever tackled. Bar none! Which makes us all the more proud of our finished product.
Our trousers are made from 100% wool matching the weight of the originals so you can wear your blues even in warm weather. Not the heavy coat weight so often used in other re-enacting garments. The same is true of our gray wool. All of our trousers come with 2 side seam pockets. Now there are many examples of these trousers without pockets and if you don't want pockets we won't put pockets in your pair. But I can not imagine not having pockets in my pants. So our standard is going to "with".

How to size your trousers. Just order your normal size that you always wear, 32, 34, what ever your waist is. Just remember that these pants are cut so that the waist band is at your belly button.

"From 1849 through 1854 undershirts were required in blue flannel, 'twilled and wool-dyed' During the Civil War years 35,000 'Blue woollen knit undershirts' were needed in 1863 alone, and further 16,000 in 1864. As with blue overshirts, many sailors decorated their undershirt with elaborate embroidery or 'mother of pearl' buttons." (BLUEJACKETS)
"Proposals from the contractors for the supply of 'Blue Flannel under Shirts' were first officially invited in 1844, and request for this garment in various types of cloth were repeated almost every year until 1864" (BLUEJACKETS)

Now the top photo left is a shot of Jack wearing our flannel undershirt untucked to give you a good look at it. Then Jack has it tucked in as one would before putting on your jumper.
Then you have a photo of an original Navy flannel undershirt courtesy of the Horse Soldier, Gettysburg Pa. This one has some embroidery on it making the seams stand out. Ours is cut with the yoke pattern as well it's just hard to see the seam, blue on blue and all.

This is just one of the options for enlisted men as per the Confederate Navy Reg.'s, as they approve the white cotton hat listed above, the same hat in Gray wool while at sea and black wool for cooler climes. Although not US Regulation there are surviving examples of this hat from US sailors. There is even one from the USS HARTFORD, Adm. Farragut's flag ship. Which spent most of it's time in southern waters.

I remember how surprised I was when I came to the realization that so many officers and men were wearing private purchase foot wear. Not brogans! When you put those photos under a magnifying glass they're actually pretty easy to spot. Most officers who are not wearing boots, quite a few of the rank and file as well as sailors. A good example would be James Wick's shoes, a sailor aboard the C.S.S. Hunley, those are private purchase.

Our warm weather "sennit" straw hat has an embroidered 5 point star patch attached to its crown, the brim is lined underneath with black cotton cloth to deflect the glare of the sun. Sewn in leather sweatband which adds much to the comfort. Black ribbon band for tightening and decor. Anyone who has spent any time on the water knows just what a problem glare can be. Our new Sailor's straw hat not only reduces glare but is more comfortable to wear and cooler, it blocks more of the sun's rays. NAVAL OFFICER'S HAT
First let me say that I can you show you many-many period photographs of this unadorned hat being worn by boys, young men, merchant seamen, river boat captains and privateers. The sailors among you will undoubtedly recognize it as a midshipman's but just to complicate matters even further this chapeau is sometimes seen being sported by senior officers. Not only was it popular across the spectrum but it spanned an extraordinarily long life as well. You have to remember that our ancestors did not have the benefit of stitch counters to tell them it was wrong. Oh the poor souls! So why do we call it a Naval Officer's Hat? For no other reason than we had to call it something now didn't we.
In Jim Murphy's book, "Gone a Whaling" on page 18 there is a (circa 1855) photo of a crew from an English whaler. 21 of the 28 men pictured are wearing this hat.
Well boys & girls the moral of this story is that if you want to wear this hat you can probably find a historically accurate reason to do so.

The entire front pain of glass bound in it's brass door swings on a sturdy hinge giving you plenty of room to replace your candles as needed. You can hang it by the top loop or it has 2 pre-drilled key holes in it's back. So place the nails / screws where ever you want to hang it. Then you can just slip it on or off as you please. CIVIL WAR PETTY OFFICER'S PATCH
 
There were no regulation insignia worn by regular US sailors prior to 1866 other than the Petty Officers. It was up to the sailors to know who was who on his ship. The only distinction being regulations required them to wear it on the proper sleeve. Right sleeve if the Petty Officer is a boatswains' mate, gunner's mate, carpenter's mate, master-at-arms, ship's steward, or ship's cook. Left sleeve for Petty Officers that are quater-master, quarter-gunner, captain of the forecastle, captain of tops, captain of after-guard, armorer, cooper, ship's corporal, or captain of the hold.
