** CLEANING AND CARING FOR YOUR WEAPON **

  Black powder is highly corrosive so it is important to clean your gun properly every time you use it. For muskets save an old percussion cap, put it on the nipple and let the hammer down completely but slowly. Never dry fire a black powder weapon! Bring two quarts of clean water to a boil in an old coffee pot. Lean your musket up against something steady. I use the picnic table. Then pour the barrel full of hot water. Let it stand for a couple of minutes and drain. Repeat this process till the water comes out clean. Now with a dry patch and the cleaning tool of your choice (I prefer a worm), swab the barrel. Remove the dirty patch, replace with a clean one and repeat this step until the patch comes out of the barrel clean. This normally takes about 20 patches.
  Now spray a clean dry patch with Balistol and swab the inside of the barrel. Now spray a light coat of Balistol on the outside of the barrel taking care to clean well around the nipple. An old tooth brush works great. With a nipple wrench unscrew the nipple. Using a nipple pick clean the inside of the nipple, oil very lightly and replace. Oil all metal surfaces. It is not necessary to remove the barrel and lock plate every time but it should be removed at least once a year, twice if you have an active season. To remove the lock plate place the hammer on half cock and remove the two lock plate screws, the plate will come right out if you wiggle the hammer. Then take a can of WD 40 and spray the crud off the inside of the lock plate. Clean with a tooth brush and spray away any remaining gunk. Wipe dry and spray with a light coat of Balistol, now just put it back together and your ready to go. If you do this before you store your gun for the winter you will have no problems come spring. If you don't use Balistol then check the gun for rust at least every 2 months. Balistol is good for 6 months.

CLEANING SOLUTION

  Here's a recipe for the best home made cleaning solution I have ever used. Just take equal parts of Murphy's Oil Soap, hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol and mix them in an old milk jug with a screw on lid. Shake well before using, but don't get this in your eyes!!! It burns like @#$#!^%%. Then use it just like you would water in the instructions above. ***THERE IS NO NEED TO HEAT THIS SOLUTION*** Just pour it in cold. Let it stand for 5 minutes then pour it out. For a really dirty gun you may have to do it twice. Then just swab it dry and oil it as you normally would.
