A HANDY BOOK FOR U.S. SOLDIERS 1861

The 1861 handy book for the U.S. soldier was the Union army's first attempt to replace the Hardee's manual of tactics. What would the neighbors say if they knew the Union army was using a tactics book written by a Confederate general?! So they figured they better come up with one of there own and this is it. Originally printed in Philly in 1861 this 94 page book is kinda handy (hence the name) and it covers the school of the soldier very well.

BIRMINGHAM ENFIELD BOOKLET

Our new booklet, "The Arms Makers of Birmingham", is yet another addition to our continuing research of the Suppliers to the Confederacy. It will be very difficult to describe this booklet and not sound like a "broken record", so I will just say that this easy to read, easy to follow work has a wealth of information that has never before been compiled into such a convenient booklet.
It contains many photos of original weaponry, the factories where they were produced and the men who were the driving force behind them. This book nor any of our others on this subject contains speculation but rather gives the first hand accounts and supplies the source from which they were taken. The novice will enjoy the easily understandable style in which the information is presented while the "old hands" among us will appreciate the detail accumulated within this small volume. Detail which would take even the most seasoned researcher hour upon hour to compile on his own. This booklet will without a doubt quickly become the "standard" on this subject.

Mr. Barry understands the issues which concern us in these regards so seldom is an area of interest not fully explored. His writing style is easily followed by all and those FAQ's are normally answered within the first few paragraphs of each subject. This is a highly recommended book.

THE BARNETT P-53 ENFIELD

A NEW BOOK! The first of a new series written by Messrs. Craig Barry & David Burt. The Enfield rifled musket and it's various makers are explained in great detail starting with the "J.E. BARNETT & SONS" Company. Records indicate that many of the first Enfields to reach the Confederacy in the critical first days of the war were from Barnett & Sons. This booklet contains information that would otherwise be inaccessible to the average collector. Our two authors working both sides of the pond, Mr. Burt in England & Mr. Barry here in the U.S. have diligently research this weapons manufacture, points of departure and their point of entry into the CS. Many photos of the variations of lockplates, hammers and proof marks are also included. A very helpful yet inexpensive additions to any historian's firearms library.

L.A.C. ENFIELD BOOKLET

Our new London Armoury Company booklet is the most inexpensive and best source of information on that producer of weaponry that has been published to date. For those of you who have enjoyed our previously published Barnett booklet, this is the next chapter in the on going research of the suppliers to the Confederacy, and a very good chapter it is. There are many photos of original weaponry included along with details of their manufacture that you will find no where else. You will also find the history of the company and the men who founded it. Most will be intrigued by small but unique differences of features and markings found from one musket maker to another. For those who wish to further research a particular weapon, our "notes" will give you quick access to volumes of information regarding your favorite. So much information in such a small package and it easily slips into your haversack. Those unsolicited facts and figures given us by our self proclaimed experts (you know who you are) can easily be confirmed or denied before you even leave their company. Won't that be fun! Many of the smaller suppliers based in London, when relevant, are mentioned in this work.

1863 CSA REGULATIONS

Here's a tough one to find, a brand new copy of the 1863 CSA Regulations. 422 pages of bureaucratic bliss, every question (in regard to the correct army way) answered. How to set up and run every Dept. of the Army. Every form you ever wanted is here for you to copy. Hand written copies of Govt. forms are not unusual in the CS Army. Uniform regulations for both Officer and Enlisted man. Uniform regulations did not change throughout the entire war including the 1865 printing of this book. Of course we know that had little to do with what was worn but they did have lofty goals. I've telegraphed Richmond about that but so far no reply.

HARDEE'S RIFLE & LIGHT
INFANTRY TACTICS, HARD BOUND 2 VOLUME SET

The "Hardee's Rifle & Light Infantry Tactics" 2 vol. set, was and is the Gold Standard for officers both North and South.
Written by then U.S. Lt. William Hardee who is better known to us as Gen. Hardee commanding Hardee's Corp, CSA. It was taken from the French Army's instructional manuel, changes made along with additions and submitted to then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis who readily approved it. It then replaced Scott's Manuel who's tactics were somewhat dated.
It has no equal, it does however require a certain commitment and is not recommended for the faint or flighty. When it's lessons are studied and executed correctly a large body of men can move upon the field as if they were of one mind. Volume I contains School of the Company while Volume II contains School of the Battalion. Yes, it is an amazing price for a hard bound set, thank you for noticing.

HARDEE'S INFANTRY TACTICS

For riflemen and light infantry including the school of the soldier and school of the company. This paper back is designed to be carried in haversack or pocket to allow you to study in the field. Written by (at the time of the writing) Lt. W. J. Hardee. Soon to be Confederate General W. J. (Old Reliable) Hardee. Commander of Hardee's Corp, Army of Tennessee. I don't think the book needs any more recommendation than that.

1830 SCOTT'S INFANTRY TACTICS

The book, "Abstract of Infantry Tactics", although some what dated should not be disregarded "out of hand". First published in 1830 this manual for light infantry and riflemen was written by a panel of highly respected military men of the day headed up by Gen. Winfield Scott.
Almost every pre-war West Point graduate you can name, North or South was either trained using this book or in the case of Instructors who rejoined the Army (R.E.Lee, Stonewall Jackson, etc. etc.), used this book to train students under thier charge.
If you are doing Mex.War or training prewar militia this is the book required if you want to be correct.
This is an exact reprint of the original 138 page book. It contains lots of diagrams too.

1861 RIFLED MUSKET MANUAL

This has been a long time coming. Sure you can use the 1855 manual but parts of it don't really apply now do they? You can use the 1863 manual but parts of it just don't work either. Why the hell doesn't someone put together an 1861 manual? That's what I said too! So we did. Ok, I just ask the question and Craig Barry put the manual together. But I helped, a little or maybe none. Regardless those of you who shoot an 1861 Springfield or other 1861 contract rifle finally have a relevant manual for cleaning or repairing your weapon. No need to thank me, your money is thanks enough.

1862 CONFEDERATE ALMANAC

The original that this was copied from was printed by H. C. Clarke of Vicksburg Miss. I really don't know where to start! This thing is so full of information I've read it and re-read it from cover to cover while I was supposed to be listing it! Now understandably you may not need to know the phase of the moon on any particular date in 1862 but everything else is great. Each CS state is listed with populations etc. There is a day by day "dairy" of war related events from Dec. 20 of 1860 till Nov. 20 of 1861 that is outstanding. Here's one of my favorite entries. "June 17, 1861. Gen. Butler demanded 15,000 additional troops at Fortress Monroe. The Southerners burn seventy locomotives on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. An order from Gov. Magoffin that no Tennessee troops shall occupy any portion of Kentucky. The thermometer at Alexandria stands at 105 in the shade." Man! where else can you get information like that? Come to think of it, I might want to know if there was a full moon the night before a battle.

SOLDIER'S MANUEL of RIFLE FIRING 1854

The Soldier's Manuel of Rifle Firing, written in 1854 by Captain Thackeray of the 2nd Somerset Militia. For years this manual was the key to the instruction of the English Army & Cavalry on the subject of rifle firing. It has no equal and anything done on the subject since is only a variation on the theme. I can give it no higher praise than to say that this is the book that CS General Patrick Cleburne used to train his Whitworth Sharpshooters. In fact the CS Manuel written in 1863, published in Richmond for the Army of Tennessee is nothing more than a "Southern-ized" version of this book.
Not only is this a great historical document but the techniques used to train "trigger pullers" still applies today. If you take your shooting seriously you too can benefit from this text regardless of your current ability, beginner or expert.
You will find many diagrams to assist you in your understanding of the science of shooting. There are specific instructions for the officers conducting the training. As are instructions for the Armorer to convey to the troops regarding cleaning and maintenance. Even instruction for making "Leather Blacking", to be used by the troops to preserve their accoutrements. This book has been edited by Jerry & Connie Smith into a clear, concise booklet which fits easily into your haversack.

Todd Watts, Master Gun Smith and historian says this of the Manuel, "I can think of no other manual which includes so much detailed information on the use of the Enfield Rifle. It is a welcome addition to my Library!"
