Mrs. Irby Morgan's book, "HOW IT WAS", published in 1892 states the following. "Mr. Morgan (her husband) brought two of the first perfect caps home and requested me to keep them as souvenirs of the war". The caps that were used at Manasas and Bull Run were made in our cap factory from material that my husband bought. Later on page 16 she mentions that while she and her husband attened a talk given by Gen. Beauregard at the Nashville Masonic Hall, they spoke with the Gen. regarding tha battle of Manasas and informed him that Nashville made the caps that fought those battles. In the book "ENTREPOT" page 51 and 52 states, Lt. Moses H. Wright was the 1st Lt. of Artillery Ordanace service, at the factory, later control of the state arsenal at Nashville was transferred to Capt. K. Johns and Wright assumed command of the works. In the month of Oct. of 1861 alone Nashville was able to produce 4,500,000 musket caps. We do not have any idea of how thes Nashville musket caps were packaged or if they even had a label but I am not willing to let this piece of history be forgotten. So if our little tin of caps serves as nothing more than a reminder of that short lived armory - so be it, but now we have you thinking about it don't we. & 100 RWS MUSKET CAPS # 0180 $22.95 BUY NOW! ELEY (of) LONDON PERCUSSION CAP TIN
Remember our ancestors did not live in the throw away society that we do today. Anything that could be re-used was kept and recycled, they just called it common sense though. So as you can imagine tins like this were used over and over. Now I can come up with lots of things to use it for, how about your daily med.s? axle grease, vaseline, that extra musket nipple or hammer screw you can never find when you need it, extra buttons, sewing thread and needle, need I go on? Eley Percussion Caps were imported before the war and continued to be imported in the North throughout the war as well as entering the South via the Blockade Runners. The next time you are at one of our larger relic shows just take a look at any of the presentation cases for pistols, You'll very often find a tin of Eley caps included in the case. Now as you can see from the photo the original is darker in color as they were jappaned to prevent rusting. Our repro here has been tinned to prevent rusting but if you wish a darker appearance you can do that using the modern equivalent of jappaning which is shellac with a little lamp black added. # 2334 $12.95 TEMP.
